Kauri Room Events:

Java Dance Company

This term we had the Java Dance Company come to Oruaiti and put on a show for the students. The four professional dancers had previously danced for national companies and now go around schools to encourage younger people into dance.

The dancers later took all the classes for a Dance workshop and here is a video showing the Kauri workshop.

The Pavlova Volcano!

Once upon a time there was a place called Fruit Salad Land. It may sound weird, but it was really called that. The things that lived there were not humans. Notice that I said things instead of humans? If not, please read line above. They lived in hollowed-out pineapples, like Spongebob Squarepants. Next to Fruit Salad Land was a huge Pavlova Volcano, though it rarely erupted. When it erupted, Pavlova would spill out over Fruit Salad Land. Now, let me tell you about the things that lived there. As you would probably guess, they were fruits. Mangos, passion fruits, strawberries, and loads more. One of the family’s was Mr. and Mrs. Strawberry. They lived the closest to the Pavlova Volcano. Some other families were Peaches, bananas, and the other’s I mentioned earlier. One day, the Mango family ran down a road called Raspberry Road. They were hollering “Run! Run! The Volcano is erupting!” as they said this, the sky turned red and cast an orange glow over the town. All of the fruit families screamed in terror, and ran away. But suddenly the Pavlova Volcano exploded, and the Pavlova rained down on them. But one small fruit baby went up to the Pavlova and took a small bite. Her face lit up, she took another bite. The fruit people realized that Pavlova wasn’t something to fear, but eat! They ate it all up, and cleaned the town. Now they never got short of food, and they lived happily ever after! (At least until they got eaten, they are fruits you know!)

French

French lessons are twice a week and provides a good grounding in learning a language. The students are sorting out greetings and salutations with their translations. They are testing each other for good pronunciation.

We are able to use the French language in small plays and skits as seen in this video.

Cooking!!!

This term in tech all of the year 8 girls are in cooking. Our cooking teachers name is Mrs Ogbourne. The materials we use change each week depending on what we are going to be baking. So far this term we have made jam rolls and a quiche. The skills you need in cooking is to be able to read the method and how to turn the oven on.  I enjoy cooking and I think it is great to be able to experience this sort of thing.
