Oruaiti School
Procedures
for Civil Emergencies
An evacuation plan is to be
placed in every classroom and every other
teaching or work space that
children or adults are likely to be in.
Trial evacuation drills will be
held every term and a log kept
recording the date of each
practice.
In the event of an emergency the
fire alarm will be activated by
a staff member. The evacuation
procedure will be followed.
The principal will assess the
situation and make any necessary decisions relating
to the calling of emergency services and the
appropriate course of action for the children.
Emergency closure of the school
The Board of Trustees
determines whether or not the school has to
close.
There are times when neighbouring schools have to
close eg. in the case of localised flooding. At such
times Oruaiti School does not have to close
but does need to let some bus children go.
Pupils will not be released from
school at such times unless
contact has been made with
parents/caregivers to make sure the
children are not going home to an
empty house.
If parents/caregivers cannot be
contacted, pupils will be kept at school until
contact is made.
The Ministry of Education
management office will be notified.
The principal, chairperson and
other available board members
will assess the circumstances and
decide when the school will
re-open for instruction.
Circumstances will dictate which
staff remain at school until
all pupils have been collected. |
